Transport in Naxos – Athens Experience

Naxos, located in the Aegean Sea in Greece, is the largest of the Cyclades islands. Having an airport, it is a good base for then visiting the other Cycladic islands by ferry such as Amorgos, Donoussa or Iraklia for example. Here are some practical tips on transport in Naxos: How to get there? How to travel on the island ?

Going and getting around Naxos

Naxos is an island very well served by transport (plane, ferry). It is therefore easily accessible whether from Athens or from France for example.

By plane

The island of Naxos therefore has its own airport which offers local flights. Very handy if you don’t have much time, Paris is only 5 hours by plane (stopover in Athens included). You will also find the best flight offers on Ulysses.

By ferry

Like all islands, Naxos also has a port to Naxos town. It is also very practical and allows to connect Naxos to the Greek mainland as well as to the other islands of the Cyclades. Ferries to Naxos have existed since THE Piraeus (between 3h and 5h crossing depending on the type of boat), but also from Rafina. The latter is very convenient, as it is located just 20 minutes from the airport by taxi and it is less imposing than Piraeus. You can book most crossings on the website of Ferry Hopper.

Furthermore, Naxos is an excellent starting point for neighboring islands (Paros, Amorgos, Koufounissia, Mykonos, Syros…) . We suggest some routes in the following article.

How to get around Naxos?

As Naxos is a big island, it allows to offer different modes of transport.

By car

We strongly advise you to rent a vehicle on the island if you want to explore it in its entirety. For the rental of vehicles (cars, motorcycles, etc.), you will find many rental companies at the port and at the airport. If you want to book in advance, we advise you to go through Rentalcars which offers a comparison of the different rental companies and allows you to see the best offers. Motoland also offers quads, buggies and scooters.

By bus

Other transport in Naxos is also well developed. There is thus a system of bus which serves the main towns and some villages. You can find the bus timetables on this site.

By taxi

For short journeys, you can also call on the service of taxi, but there are not many of them on the island and they are quickly overrun in high season. In addition, they are taking advantage of this strong demand to increase their prices. In order not to have any unpleasant surprises, we advise you to book your taxi via Welcome Pickups.

By bike

It is also possible to rent bicycles. Be careful, the island being very mountainous, you need good legs. The agency RealBike offers classic bikes but also electric bikes for hire.
